Consultant Engineer ("Beratender Ingenieur")

The professional title "Beratender Ingenieur" (consultant engineer) is protected by german law. Only persons who are registered in the list of Consultant Engineers are allowed to use it. This requires a wide range of personal skills and statutory requirements that must be fulfilled by the Consultant Engineer:

  • At first, it requires a completed technical or scientific study.
  • He must prove at least three years of professional work and additional four-day training events.
  • He must be self-employed.
  • He must be adequately protected against liability risks arising from professional activities.

Working as a consultant engineer requires the highest standards of personal integrity. He is subject to a number of obligations, including the following:

  • He has to retrain regularly and to consider secure, technical knowledge.
  • He has to defend the interests of his client and safeguard its trade secrets.
  • He may not accept third party commissions and discounts for himself, his family and his staff.
  • He may sign only planning documents, which were by himself, made under his direction or his responsibility.

His mandatory membership in the Chamber of Engineers, Lower Saxony (Germany), a corporation under public law, will ensure that he complies with these obligations.
